Masonry Repair, Tuck Pointing, & Sealing
What Is Masonry Repair and Masonry?
Masonry repair consists of removing and replacing brick, stone, or other common masonry elements of a structure. Masonry repair also includes plugging gaps, fixing cracks in mortar, and sealing the surfaces.
Masonry is a popular construction technique used around the world and has many advantages. Individual elements of masonry are usually stone, brick, and concrete blocks. Marble, granite, limestone, glass block, and adobe are also common elements of masonry. These elements are arranged in a wall or floor and bound together with a substance called mortar. The finished structure is considered highly durable.
The differences between masonry, cement, and mortar are explained in this short video.
Concrete block walls are a form of masonry that often need repair. Severe cracks in concrete block walls, and/or shifting of the blocks can be repaired using a carbon fiber grid process. Please view our carbon fiber grid repair page.
What Causes Mortar to Deteriorate?
Usually moisture is the cause of deterioration. In northern climates, repeated freezing and thawing can cause mortar to lose its adhesive properties. The mortar will crumble and turn sandy.
SKV Construction has several products to tuck point and perform general masonry repair. Surfaces can be sealed with a breathable color coating that preserves the surface for years.
The below photo illustrates what needed to be done to this masonry wall. The brick work was tuck-pointed, numerous bricks damaged by an auto accident were replaced, the original coating was removed by high pressure washing, and a new breathable coating was applied to protect the masonry walls.
